How to read your meter

For a standard digital meter, write down the numbers before the decimal point. Smart meters show your reading on the display or in your supplier's app. Gas meters may read in cubic metres (m³) or hundreds of cubic feet — suppliers convert those to kWh on your bill using a standard formula, so if your meter does not read in kWh, compare against the kWh figure on your statement instead.

Why does the standing charge matter?

Even a period with very low usage still costs money: at the Oct–Dec 2026 cap you pay 54.83p a day for electricity and 29.68p a day for gas just to stay connected — about £25.35 for a 30-day month before any energy is used.
